How to Explain Being Therian to Your Family and Friends
Coming Out of the Forest: Sharing Your Therian Identity
Deciding to tell someone you're therian is an important step. You have no obligation to do it, but if you decide to share this part of yourself, this guide will help you do it in the best way possible.
Before Telling: Questions for Yourself
- Am I sure of my therian identity?
- Is this person trustworthy?
- Am I prepared for possible negative reactions?
- Can I explain it clearly and calmly?
- Do I have a support system if the conversation doesn't go well?
How to Explain It Simply
Here are some ways to explain it depending on the audience:
For parents/family:
"There's something about me I'd like to share with you. I feel a very deep connection with [animal]. It's like a part of my identity that helps me understand myself better. It's called being therian, and there's a large community of people who feel the same way. It's not something negative: it makes me feel more connected to myself and to nature."
For friends:
"You know those TikTok videos of people with animal masks? Well, I identify with that community. I feel very connected to [animal] and it's an important part of who I am."
For skeptics:
"It's similar to how some people feel a deep connection with their zodiac sign, but in my case it's with an animal. It's a form of self-knowledge that makes me feel good."
Useful Talking Points
- It's a real community: Millions of people worldwide identify as therians
- It has historical roots: Indigenous cultures have honored the human-animal connection for millennia
- It's positive: Being therian connects me with nature and helps with my emotional well-being
- It's not dangerous: It's a form of expression and self-knowledge, nothing more
How to Handle Negative Reactions
If they laugh:
"I understand it might seem different, but it's something real to me. I ask you to respect it even if you don't fully understand it."
If they worry:
"I appreciate your concern, but this isn't something negative. It makes me feel good about myself. It's like any other form of personal identity."
If they don't understand:
"You don't need to understand it completely. I just need you to know it's important to me and that you support me."
What NOT to Do
- Don't share when you're angry or in the middle of an argument
- Don't expect everyone to understand immediately
- Don't get defensive if they ask questions
- Don't pressure anyone to accept it right away
- Don't share with people you know will be hostile
