Identity

Therian

A person who identifies spiritually, emotionally, or psychologically with a non-human animal. The term comes from 'therianthropy' (from the Greek therion = beast and anthropos = human).

Theriotype

The specific animal a therian identifies with. For example, a wolf therian has the wolf as their theriotype. This is the core of a therian's identity.

Otherkin

A person who identifies as a non-human being, which can include mythical or fantastical creatures (dragons, elves, etc.). Unlike therians, otherkin are not limited to real animals.

Polytherian

A therian who identifies with more than one animal. They may have two or more simultaneous theriotypes.

Cladotherian

A therian whose theriotype is an entire taxonomic group rather than a specific species. For example, identifying with felines in general rather than a domestic cat.

Community

Furry

A member of the community who enjoys anthropomorphic animal characters (animals with human traits) as a creative hobby. It doesn't necessarily imply a spiritual identification with an animal.

Pack

A group of therians who form a close-knit community, especially common among wolf therians. Can be an online or in-person group.

Howl

A gathering or meetup of therians, either online or in person. The name refers to the wolf's howl as a call to the pack.

Experience

Shift

An experience where a therian feels an intensified connection with their theriotype. There are several types: mental, phantom, dream, sensory, cameo, and aura.

Awakening

The moment when a person discovers or accepts their therian identity. It can be gradual or sudden, and it's usually a major turning point.

Phantom Limbs

Sensations of animal limbs that don't physically exist: tails, ears, wings, claws. A common part of phantom shifts.

Shifts

Mental Shift (M-Shift)

When a therian's mindset shifts closer to that of their animal. This can include sharper instincts, more primal reactions, or changes in thought patterns.

Phantom Shift (Ph-Shift)

The sensation of having animal body parts (tail, ears, wings, claws). These are phantom sensations similar to what amputees experience with phantom limbs.

Dream Shift (D-Shift)

A dream where the therian experiences being their animal. These are usually vivid dreams involving running, flying, hunting, or behaving as the theriotype.

Sensory Shift (S-Shift)

When a therian's senses heighten in a way similar to their animal. This can affect hearing, smell, sight, or other senses.

Cameo Shift

A temporary shift involving an animal that isn't the therian's usual theriotype. It's like a visit from another animal spirit.

Aura Shift

When a therian's energy or presence changes to reflect that of their animal. Others may notice this change in their attitude or behavior.

Activity

Quadrobics

The athletic practice of moving on all fours, mimicking quadruped animals. Popular among therians as a form of physical expression and connection with their theriotype.

Techniques to reconnect with the present during intense shifts. Can include breathing exercises, contact with cold surfaces, or mindfulness techniques.

The phenomenon of identifying as a non-human animal. From the Greek therion (beast) and anthropos (human). This is the foundational concept that defines the therian community.

Culture

Kitsune

A mythical fox from Japanese mythology. A popular term in the therian community for fox therians, especially when wearing Japanese-style masks.

Fursona

An anthropomorphic animal character that represents a person in the furry community. Some therians also create fursonas based on their theriotype.
